General Questions

How long have you been in business?
We opened shop in April, 2003.

Are most of your clients local?
Initially, the vast majority of our clients were local. Over time, and especially due to the advancement of some communicationtechnologies (e.g. Skype, etc.), this changed and we started working with more and more clients based out of Toronto and the northern US states. Today, we're fairly global in respect to where our clients are based.

Which countries in particular?
Canada, U.S., U.K. (London), Switzerland, Netherlands, Pakistan, India, Australia and New Zealand.

Do you outsource any of your work?
100% of our design work is done in house. We do bring in other trusted professionals depending on the job requirements, usually in the form of web programmers. We've been working with these individuals for a number of years now and fully trust their instincts, talent, and level of professionalism.

My nephew can do the job for half of what you quoted. Your prices are ridiculous.
Please rephrase as a question.

You don't have any costs on your website - why not?
Because no two jobs are ever alike. Each client is vastly different from the one before, and individual requirements are always varied. We also design each project from the ground up so every job is unique. With that in mind, posting prices on our website would restrict us, and you, in terms of how jobs are done and delivered. We're always willing to put together a custom quote together for your project so please, don't hesitate to ask.

Website Design

How much does a website cost?
There a many factors involved in the development of a website, so we customize each quote based on the complexity and size. Some factors we consider are:

  • How many pages would you like your site to have? (this number often changes during the development stage, therefore we provide a per page cost in our quote)
  • Are there any special features you would like, such as flash or video?
  • What level of interaction will you require?
  • Will you be using us for your website hosting?
  • Will you require the ability to make updates to your website on your own on an on-going basis?

Do I have to host my website with your company?
No, we do not require you to host your website with us. If you decide to opt for using the content management system, they would require you to host with them (Adobe). The costs for hosting are relatively low and we would be happy to provide you with a monthly cost.

Do you provide website maintenance?
Absolutely! We offer a retainer program, where we will provide minor updates to your site each month, or in the time you specify. Please see our Website Design page for more information.

Our website maintenance program includes:

  • Product or service changes/updates
  • Text re-writes or improvements
  • Adding new information or updates
  • Archiving PDF documents

How many design concepts do you provide for the home page?
Unless otherwise stated in the quote, Fifth and Missing will provide one initial design concept based on feedback from the initial client meeting. If this concept is not suitable, we will provide a second concept based on further feedback from the client. Any new concepts after these initial two concepts will be charged on a per hour basis. Once a concept design is chosen, reasonable revisions to this concept are included in the cost of the website construction.

Why is my website not in the top of the Search Engine List?
About 20% of where you are placed in search engine lists is related to the website development. You will need to submit your web page to search engines or use different search engine optimization methods to help get your site ranked higher.

Can I sell products online using my website? If I want to make my own changes to the website on a weekly basis, how do I do this?
We are pleased to offer access to the content management system we use (Business Catalyst). There is a one-time fee, which allows you access to the e-commerce function if you intend to provide online sales. There are many other really useful features and benefits of using Business Catalyst, such as the ability to update your site as often as you wish, add/delete pages, add images/text/video later on, etc. Ask us today for more information regarding Business Catalyst.

What if I already have a website but would like a new design?
No problem. Generally, the amount of work involved with either developing a new website or redesigning an old one, from a design aspect, is pretty much the same. We will provide you with a quote that meets the needs of your business.

What services do you offer after the website is designed?
Once your website design is deemed to be complete, we will provide you with the opportunity to review the resulting work. We will make one set of minor changes at no extra cost within 14 days of the start of the review period. Minor changes do not include changes to images, colour schemes or any navigation feature.

Will I own the website?
Yes, the website, including source code unless specifically mentioned otherwise, is yours once final payment has been received. The website, graphics and domain name are all owned by you. We also offer hosting services if required.

What software do you use to design your websites/are they designed in-house?
See our website design page for a listing of software and programs we use at Fifth and Missing Design Group.

Our list of graphic design services we offer is quite substantial. Please visit our graphic design page for a more comprehensive look. If you still have questions about something not on our list, please feel free to contact us.

How much do your charge to design a new logo or a brochure?
Every client and every job is different. Based on your specific requirements, we will provide you with a quote. Our quote is broken down into three areas: Design, Project Management and Printing (if applicable).

Each design we do is priced out individually, depending on the complexity involved. Different options may be selected for print materials, such as gloss coating, full colour on both sides, a heavy stock weight, etc.

How long with it take you to design my flyer? Or brochure?
Depending on the specs of your project, we will work around your timeframes as best we can. We pride ourselves on responding in timely manner, keeping you informed of what stages we are at as the project progresses.

When designing a logo, how many initial concepts do you provide?
We provide a minimum of three initial design concepts, along with one hour of email, meetings and phone communication.

Will I own the rights to the logo? How is the logo supplied to me?
You will have full ownership of the logo once it is completed. We will supply you with the following file types of your logo: PDF, JPEG, EPS (vector & raster) and GIF.

How many design concepts do you provide for business cards? What if I don't like the first design?
We provide two design concepts for double-sided business cards. We will provide one design concept for letterhead, secondary letterhead and envelopes. We will work with you so that you are happy with your final designs.

Can you provide me with a concept before I agree to enlist your services?
Just like you would not ask a dentist to fill a tooth to see if you like his/her work, a designer's task is to design for you. We have an extensive portfolio where we have included many samples of the work we have provided for our clients.

Can you help me develop a brand for my business?
We certainly can. We have helped many businesses with branding. One of the advantages of using the same designer for multiple projects is that they know your industry, what your expectations are and can keep your materials consistent.

Do you provide printing services?
Yes. We have long-standing relationships with a network of trade-only printers in Ottawa, Markham, Toronto, Ohio and California. We'd be happy to answer any of your questions relating to printing.

Do you supply 'working' files when a job is finished?
No. We retain full ownership over all concepts, working files, etc. that are used to produce the finished artwork.

Who owns the copyright to the artwork once a project is completed?
Fifth and Missing retains the copyright of all designs that we create. When full payment has been received, we can, upon request, provide you with the final files.

I designed a brochure in Corel Draw. Can you use it?
No.

I designed a brochure in Microsoft Paint. Can you use it?
No.

Payment

What payment methods do you accept?
We find that pretty much all of our clients pay by cheque.

What are your payment terms?
Our payment terms are 30 days from issuance of your invoice.
